GottaTalkPoker is an imaginative and constantly changing online poker community with a primary goal of providing the friendliest, safest, and most intellectually open poker community on the internet. We serve our membership through creative methods of improving overall poker acumen, positive interaction to maintain a better standard of character for today's poker players, and raising the bar for poker education by encouraging intellectual fairness and openness, attracting the best and brightest of online players. We aim to continue to provide what other poker sites cannot through individual care to its membership cooperatively with strong member-driven concepts and growth platforms.
We believe in intelligent debate, not "flaming". We believe in respect, not "trolling".
One of the biggest problems with online interaction today is that we sometimes forget there is a person on the other side of the monitor, and as such, tend to hide behind our keyboards. Instead, our goal is to bring the best out of each other.
The very nature of our medium, one of reading each others' written word, tends to lend itself more often than not to inferred "tone" and suggested meaning that is not always there. It's natural, it's how our mind processes other people's words. Something that is written tersely will usually be interpreted negatively...even if that is not the desired intent.
Our comments here should always be read in a calm, level, and conversational tone...as though we were speaking at the neighborhood pub. People don't always take that approach, and it can lead to severe misunderstandings online, but try to remember this whenever possible:
all GottaTalkers' posts should be read in the same manner:
a calm, level, and conversational tone.
As everyone knows, civility is paramount here at GottaTalk, and it's also one of the hardest things to achieve in today's online world. Unlike at other forums, we DO ask readers to assume the BEST before they assume the worst...
In 2003, Chris Moneymaker, an amateur player who won his entry online from Pokerstars, won the main event at the World Series of Poker. This changed the poker world forever, both on and offline...by 2004, the internet was bursting at the seams with online poker rooms, along with a veritable forest of websites, forums, and banner farms promoting them.
In 2004, one of the many poker forums built and opened that year, WannaTalkPoker.com launched, hoping to capitalize on the sudden popularity of the game, specifically the online market. It was no different than any other site at the time. However, all things change...
In the fall of 2004, wannatalkpoker.com changed ownership, with Jack Drury (known around here as "Jack_Benny") at the helm, and the site started moving in new directions, along paths untaken by other poker sites. With a primary goal of providing a safe and friendly place for poker fans--old and new alike--to gather, interact, and play in a manner other than the internet's barbaric norm, the NEW WannaTalkPoker was launched. It was never an overnight success, but those who found it developed an immediate bond with the site, and a real community was born.
As 2005 dawned, the site began growing in earnest and built a reputation of honesty, fairness, and trust: a solid foundation for the community that would follow. Over the next five years, the community would continue to evolve, changing its direction as its members needs changed, and redefining the word "community" for online poker.
Pioneering the first member-run forum--the members selected their own officials to run the site as THEY saw fit, not under a single ownership--wannatalkpoker.com became well-known for their great prize pools and easy to follow Championships; over the years, three Championship winners claimed computers, alnog with thousands of dollars worth of prizes and cash. During it's 6 year run, WannaTalkPoker gave out over $10,000 in cash and prizes.
When WannaTalkPoker said, "It pays to be a WannaTalker", it was dead-on TRUE. But, all good things must come to an end, and WannaTalkPoker.com had grown as much as it could. To effect change, it had to evolve, and move forward into something entirely new and different.
"When wanting to isn't enough..."
In 2010, GottaTalkPoker took off like a shot, taking the best of what WannaTalkPoker had to offer, refining and tempering it to reach more people than ever before, and ultimately, gave out more than ever before. Over the following two years, the previously established definition of online poker "community" soared to heights previously unimagined.
In 2013, we took a step back to reevaluate everything in our site's structure, from the unique content we offered our members, to the behind-the-scenes elements of past successes. It was time for a complete site restructuring and reimagining, respecting its history while preparing for the massive changes in the online poker landscape. With a new online poker boom on the horizon, it was paramount that we meet those challenges prepared to serve our community as never before.
So were we done evolving? No. THIS was just the start of a continuing growth process that will see GottaTalkPoker and its truly unique community grow and move into the future of the game we all hold so dear.
